The family of the late Kelvin Kiptum’s Coach has expressed dissatisfaction with the results of an autopsy conducted on the deceased’s body.
This comes as Police provides details about the moments leading to the accident that claimed the lives of Coach Garvais Hazkizamana and World Marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum.
The coach and Kiptum died in an accident along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road on Sunday.
Elgeyo Marakwet police Commander Peter Mulinge stated that two days ago Sharon Kosgei, the surviving passenger recorded a statement with the DCI.
Sharon’s statement revealed that she noticed the car, driven by Kiptum, veering off the road at the accident site.
“According to her statement, she quickly alerted Kiptum that they were going out of the road, at which point Kiptum accelerated and was unable to control the car, leading to the accident,” said Mulinge.
Sharon further revealed that she was alert before the accident but does not know how she survived, disclosing that they had eaten in Eldoret before heading towards Kaptagat.
The postmortem on the body of the coach was conducted by a team of pathologists, led by Dr. Benson Macharia.
However, the postmortem report on Coach Hakizamana revealed that he had consumed undigested food.
Dr. Macharia also confirmed serious fractures on the skull and multiple bruises on various body parts
The information surrounding the fate has prompted the family of Coach Hakizamana to raise questions about the circumstances of the accident and called for further investigations.
The family also expressed dissatisfaction with how Sharon survived given the extensive vehicle damage.
“We are not satisfied, and we are asking the Kenyan government to carry out proper investigations into the accident,” said a niece to the deceased coach, identified as Sandrine Usawe.
Hakizamana’s body will be flown to Nairobi and then to Kigali, Rwanda, for burial.
The bodies are preserved at Eldoret hospital morgue as DCI officers intensify investigations to determine the cause of the accident.
A report will be released after completing the investigations, according to Mulinge. Kiptum’s family has yet to set a postmortem and burial date, though Athletics Kenya officials mentioned February 24 for the burial.
