General Moses Ali was on Monday declared by National Resistance Movement (NRM) as the preffered parliamentary candidate for East Moyo County in Adjumani following the endorsement by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni.
This grant took place ahead of Uganda’s general election scheduled for January 15, 2026.

Except on 2006, Ali has won all other parliamentary races between 2001 and 2021.
His camp maintains that this upcoming election for the term 2026 to 2031 is his last.
Adjumani has historically been an NRM stronghold, with occasional opposition victories. In the last elections, of 79,364 registered voters, Museveni received 35,125 votes, followed by NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi with 7,866 votes.
But Who Is Moses Ali?
Gen Moses Ali is a Ugandan lawyer, a politician and a retired military officer. He is the current Second Deputy Prime Minister, the Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament and the Member of Parliament for
Ali was born on 5th April 1939 in Adjumani District, Uganda.
He previously served in the Cabinet of Uganda as Third Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business from May 2011 until June 2016.
He also served as the first Deputy Prime Minister from June 2016 to May 2021.
He joined the army at a young age, and received advanced training in Israel and the UK, rising swiftly through the ranks—from 2nd Lieutenant in 1969 to Brigadier by 1974.
Ali served under the dictatorial regime of president Idi Amin as Minister of Interior and later Finance but fell out with thegovernment and was stripped of his military privileges.
Following Amin’s fall in 1979, Ali went into exile and later led the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) rebel group during the 1980s.
In 1986, he reconciled with President Museveni, integrating his fighters into the national army and earning the rank of Major General. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in 2003 and to General in 2012.
Museveni Also Seeking Another Term
President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for 39 years, is seeking votes to extend his reign to nearly half a century.

The 81-year-old has been in power since 1986 and is slso campaigning for the upcoming elections.
