Two individuals, a man and a woman who were in a vehicle and who are believed to have been in love drowned in Junja Dam on January 17, 2023.
Murera Ward MCA Ngatha Wambiri on Wednesday, January 18, confirmed that the two occupants of the vehicle had drowned.
A team of divers and firefighters from Kiambu County successfully located the car and recovered the body of the woman from the dam.
“We got here at dawn and we pulled out one body. The second body is still trapped in the car but we should be able to bring the body of the deceased to shore,” one of the drivers revealed.
Witnesses told the press that the car arrived by the dam on Tuesday evening, but the two occupants did not alight from the vehicle.
According to them, the vehicle begun moving towards the dam at a slow speed, efforts to alert the occupants of the impending danger turning futile.
First responders watched the car disappear into the large pool of water, but owing to the darkness, the rescue mission was put off to the next morning.
The body of the deceased was ferried to the General Kago Funeral Home. Police have launched investigations into the circumstances under which the two died.
However, the area locals have claimed that despite the area being a popular picnic site, the dam was a ticking time bomb.
They also demanded that the area surrounding the dam be fenced, and the remarks were echoed by Wambiri.
“I will table a bill in the county assembly to have all five dams in the county fenced to reduce the number of lives lost,” he stated.
