3 Dies In Fatal Incident In Ruiru Amid Fuel Costs Protests

Three people have been reported dead following an accident involving boda boda riders during fuel price protests in Kimbo, Ruiru, on Monday, May 18.

Two other people were injured in the incident, which occurred amid ongoing demonstrations over rising fuel prices that have caused transport disruptions across the country.

According to reports, the boda boda riders were speeding away after allegedly attempting to avoid paying tolls imposed by protesters along the road.

The riders reportedly collided during the chaos, leading to the fatal accident that resulted in deaths and injuries.

Police officers later arrived at the scene and collected the bodies as authorities moved to restore order in the area.

No further information has been revealed about the condition of the riders who were injured during the collision.

Meanwhile, authorities are yet to provide comment or further details surrounding the deaths in Ruiru.

The incident occurred as protests over high fuel prices continued to affect movement and transport services in several parts of the country.

Transport stakeholders have paralysed operations across the country under the #RejectFuelPrices protests.

The demonstrations followed a recent increase in petrol and diesel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), with commercial drivers decrying the economic strain and impact on livelihoods.

The protests have led to road blockades, transport disruptions and demonstrations in several towns and highways since Monday morning, with vehicles torched and reports of protesters being arrested.

Police have also been deployed in different areas to clear barricaded roads and maintain order as commuters continue to face transport challenges, with reports of protesters being shot in some instances.

The Ruiru incident adds to a growing number of injuries reported during the protests across the country.

A protester in Nakuru who was ran over by a vehicle in the midst of demonstrations also died.

Several protesters also suffered gunshot wounds in Thika during the protests.
