Kenyan referee Peter Waweru who holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pure Mathematics is a senior lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
The 42 year old was picked among the 26 centre referees officiating the AFCON 2023 tournaments, alongside other Kenyans – Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Yiembe in the assistant referee posts.
Peter officiated the group-stage match between Morocco and DRC Congo, which ended in a 1-1 draw. He made his debut in AFCON in 2019 when CAF appointed him to run proceedings in Namibia’s final Group D match against Ivory Coast.
The arguably best Kenyan referee will take home a huge amount of money from the tournament as speculated based on the amount referees will be paid.
According to reports, a referee will scoop more than 196,000 for every match a referee officiates.
In addition, based on their performance in the AFCON, the referees will be compensated with Ksh195,500 for each match officiated.
