Mammoth of mourners have gathered in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican, Italy for the funeral of Former Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
The funeral Mass which was led by Pope Francis was attended by European royals and thousands of clerics, it being rare in modern times for a living Pope to bury his predecessor.
Benedict was buried in a crypt beneath St Peter’s Basilica that holds the tombs of more than ninety of his predecessors.
The pope died on Saturday, December 31, 2022 aged 95 aafterseveral years of illness.
Benedict who was also controversial, in 2013 became the first Pope to resign in 600 years. The Pope cited old age as the cause of his resignation.
