Judge Grace Nzioka has sentenced Joseph Irungu to death.
Irungu, also known as Jowie was accused of brutally killing businesswoman Monica Kimani.
“After the commission of the offense, there was an attempt to conceal the evidence. The crime had serious psychological and physical harm to the victim and the family. The prosecution invited this court to pronounce a death sentence,” Nzioka said in her speach.
The case, which started in 2018 was involving Jowie Irungu and Jaque Maribe as the main suspects. Maribe was released after being found not guilty of the murder.
Judge Nzioka said that Jowie would not be sentenced to a rehabilitation-based sentence because he did not himself admit that he committed the offence and that he is ready to change his behaviour.
Nzioka also added that a reconciliation-based sentence would not be applicable because the two families cannot sit together.
In her judgement, Grace said that even if everyone has the right to live, there are serious matters which limit the freedom to live.
Grace also highlighted various other alternatives for punishment, but all were considered inapplicable on the basis of the seriousness of the case.
